What happens during a women’s health exam?
During the exam, your provider takes your vitals and asks about your lifestyle, family medical history, and any symptoms. They then conduct three main exams.
Breast exam
During this exam, you sit on the exam table and place your arm behind your head. Your provider uses two fingers to create circular motions around your breasts. This allows them to detect any abnormalities and identify any signs of breast cancer.
They also educate you on how to do this exam at home regularly.
Pelvic exam
For this exam, you privately change into a paper robe and then lie on your back on the exam table. You place your feet in stirrups located at the end of the table.
Your provider then inserts a lubricated speculum (a small metal tool) into your vagina. This should be painless and a little cold. They check your vagina, uterus, vulva, and cervix for any noticeable signs of STIs, cysts, or cancer.
Pap smear
A pap smear tests you for cancerous cells in your cervix — Sage Medical Clinic recommends this every 3-5 years. During the procedure, your provider inserts a small, long swab into your vagina to collect cells in your cervix.
